Experience the Beauty of New England: Our Family’s Fall Foliage Road Trip
As the vibrant colors of autumn begin to paint the landscapes of New England, our family is gearing up for an unforgettable road trip in October. Our itinerary is packed with stunning natural sites, cultural experiences, and plenty of opportunities for family bonding amidst the dazzling fall foliage. I was inspired by the Fall Foliage Queen herself, Helene in Between!
Kickoff in York, Maine
Our adventure begins with a flight from Nashville, TN (BNA) to Manchester, NH. After landing, we’ll pick up an SUV and embark on a short drive to York, Maine—only an hour away! We’ll spend our first two nights with our buddy Lorne on his family farm, with the Atlantic coast right at our doorstep. The picturesque views of the changing leaves against the backdrop of the ocean will surely set the stage for a magical trip.
Exploring York and Portsmouth
On the agenda are explorations in York and the nearby coastal town of Portsmouth, NH. Known for its charming shops, historic sites, and delicious seafood, Portsmouth is a perfect spot for strolling and savoring local treats. We can’t wait to indulge in some Maine lobster and hunt for unique finds in local boutiques!
Scenic Adventures in the White Mountains
Then we'll head out early for the Conway Scenic Railway. This 1.5-hour ride offers stunning views of the breathtaking White Mountains and the vibrant foliage that makes this region famous. After the train ride, we’ll lace up our hiking boots for the Silver Cascade Waterfall hike (1.5 miles roundtrip) and the scenic beauty of Diana's Bath (another 1.5 miles hike). We’ll end the day at Omni Mount Washington Resort for some well-deserved rest.
Driving the Kancamagus Highway
Get ready for one of the highlights of our trip! We’ll embark on a scenic drive along the iconic Kancamagus Highway— a must-do for any fall foliage enthusiast. This stretch is renowned for its breathtaking views and photo opportunities! We’ll make stops at Flume Gorge for a 2-mile hike and explore the beautiful trails at Franconia Notch State Park, soaking in the incredible vistas along the way.
Apple Orchards and Maple Sugar Houses
The next day is dedicated to experiencing the harvest season in full swing. We’ll visit Burtt's Apple Orchard for some apple picking and then enjoy delicious maple syrup treats at Bragg Farm Maple Sugarhouse. We’ll wrap up the day in Stowe, VT, where we’ll be staying at the delightful Trapp Family Lodge.
A Taste of Vermont
The next day will be filled with Vermont specialties! We’ll kick off the day at Cold Hollow Cider Mill, a great spot for cider donuts, before taking a fun-filled tour of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory. Fingers crossed we get to sample new flavors!
Then we’ll visit Mad River Taste Place to sample local cheeses and then have brunch at Backcountry Cafe. Our explorations will continue with a hike in the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Estate and a visit to Hildene, the former home of Robert Todd Lincoln, where we can enjoy the natural beauty surrounding this historic estate.
Final Adventures and Souvenirs
Our final day will be bittersweet as we prepare to head home. We’ll take a stop at Northshire Bookstore, a beloved local gem, before starting our journey back to Manchester for our flight. After a week filled with adventure, new experiences, and unforgettable memories, we’ll be returning to Nashville with hearts full of joy and cameras full of beautiful autumn photographs.
